About Moonlite Drive-in
One of the oldest drive-ins in Virginia, the Moonlite Drive-in was closed in 2013 and almost torn down. However, a long time fan of the Moonlite partnered with the Moonlite's owner in 2013 and the two agreed to renovate and re-open the Moonlite. They did some repairs and improvements and showed a few films on the old 35mm equipment in 2016. However, during late 2016 or early 2017, the agreement between the two soured and the owner allegedly pulled out of the agreement to re-open the Moonlite. As of late 2017, the Moonlite is once again closed as the deal to re-open it fell through. As far as we know, there are no plans to re-open the Moonlite Drive-in at this point so we are changing its status to permanently closed. However, in 2020 in the midst of Covid-19 closures, the Barter Theater built a stage at the Moonlite and starting acting out plays there. Patrons come and park in their cars and watch the show. The audio for the live action plays is broadcast on FM Radio and they also project a live simulcast of the action onto the Moonlite's drive-in screen. There are no concessions provided. It is yet to be seen whether the Barter Theater will continue to perform plays there once Covid restrictions are lifted. But for now, at least this great drive-in theater is getting new life and helping bring entertainment to the area.
