About Starlite Drive-in
The Starlite Drive-in was a single screen drive-in theater located in Mitchell, SD. Originally opened in 1949 as the Lake Vue Drive-In Theater, the Starlite Drive-in has been closed and opened a number of times. It was purchased by new owners in 1976 and renamed the Starlite Drive-in. It operated from 1949 until it was closed in 1986. It sat dark for about 7 years and was re-opened in 1993. It operated for another ten years but was closed in 2013 as the film industry switched to digital projection and the owner did not want to invest in a digital projector. However, after sitting dark for another seven years, the Startlite was re-opened the weekend of May 8th, 2020. The Starlite was re-opened because of indoor theaters being closed because of the Coronavirus. The owner of the Starlite also owns several indoor theaters and he took a digital projector from one of the indoor theaters and installed it at the drive-in. The owner plans to operate the Starlite at least throughout the summer of 2020 but after that, its future is uncertain. But in May of 2023, the owner announced on the drive-in's Facebook page they would not re-open in 2023 becaue the drive-in lost money in 2021 and 2022. If it re-opens, we will update this page.
was recently closed in 2013. IT had been closed before in late 1980's but was revived and re-opened in 1993. Unfortunately, that revival only lasted 10 years.
