Toy Story 5 is directed by Andrew Stanton and stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack, with Jessie taking center stage as the film’s primary protagonist. A return to form for the franchise, even if it never quite reaches the heights of the original trilogy, Toy Story 5 capitalizes on a timely premise about technology replacing traditional play while delivering surprisingly meaningful character development for a franchise entering its fifth installment.
Jessie’s fear of losing Bonnie’s affection gives the film its emotional core, continuing the series’ longtime themes of abandonment, growing up, and the purpose toys find through the children who love them. Her journey back to Emily’s farmhouse, and eventual discovery that she remained an important part of Emily’s life, provides the movie’s strongest emotional sequence and gives Jessie considerably more depth than previous installments.
Lily also works well as an antagonist because she is not inherently evil. She genuinely believes she is helping Bonnie socialize, but her reliance on technology causes her to misunderstand what Bonnie actually needs. The army of demo-mode Buzz Lightyears provides much of the comedy and spectacle, while Woody’s return is handled with restraint, allowing him to support Jessie without taking over her story.
The social-media and screen-addiction commentary can occasionally feel overly direct, and the Jessie-Buzz romance develops somewhat abruptly. Still, the film successfully combines nostalgia, humor, and genuine emotional stakes. Toy Story 5 may not match Pixar’s original trilogy, but it proves the franchise still has worthwhile stories to tell.
