Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, is the highly anticipated sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and the fourth installment in Holland’s MCU Spider-Man series.
Picking up after Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter Parker from the memories of everyone who knew him, Brand New Day explores the emotional consequences of Peter’s ultimate sacrifice. Rather than spending what should have been his college years with MJ and Ned, Peter has lived largely in isolation, focusing nearly all of his energy on protecting New York as Spider-Man. This creates one of the most mature and emotional stories the MCU has given the character, with Peter struggling to figure out who he is when Spider-Man has essentially become his entire identity.
Tom Holland delivers his best performance as Spider-Man yet, capturing both Peter’s loneliness and his determination to keep helping people despite everything he has lost. The film also delivers fantastic action, particularly as Peter’s powers begin evolving and forcing him to adapt to abilities he does not fully understand. The more grounded approach makes the action feel personal while still providing the large-scale superhero spectacle audiences expect.
After the enormous expectations created by No Way Home, Brand New Day successfully begins a new chapter for Holland’s Spider-Man rather than simply trying to recreate what came before. It is emotional, exciting, and gives Peter Parker a compelling direction for the future.
