The Social Reckoning is directed by Aaron Sorkin and stars Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen, Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horwitz, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. A follow-up to The Social Network, the film follows Facebook employee Haugen as she grows concerned about the company’s practices and connects with Wall Street Journal reporter Horwitz. As they investigate the information available to her, Zuckerberg and his team face mounting scrutiny over the platform’s influence.
The film explores the decisions made inside Facebook and the consequences those decisions can have beyond the company. Its story brings together a whistleblower, a journalist, and the leader of one of the world’s most influential technology companies.
The Social Reckoning is a fine film, but it is a disappointing follow-up to The Social Network. The subject matter provides plenty of material for a compelling drama, and the central performances give the story a solid foundation. Still, the film struggles to match the impact of its predecessor, which set a high standard for a story about Facebook and the people behind it.
The film could have benefited from more screen time for Strong’s Zuckerberg. His character is central to the issues at the heart of the story, and spending more time with him would have added another dimension to the conflict. Strong is a compelling choice for the role, making his relatively limited presence feel like a missed opportunity.
The Social Reckoning is a worthwhile but uneven follow-up and worth seeing at a drive-in near you.
