Sinners is the latest film from acclaimed director Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan and newcomer Miles Caton. Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film follows twin brothers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" (both portrayed by Jordan), World War I veterans returning from Chicago's criminal underworld to open a juke joint in their hometown. They enlist their cousin Sammie (Caton), a gifted blues guitarist, to help establish a space for the town's Black community. However, their plans are disrupted when vampires, led by the sinister Remmick (in a fantastic heel turn by Jack O'Connell), target the club, drawn by Sammie's supernatural musical abilities.
The entire cast delivers compelling performances. Jordan skillfully differentiates the twins: Smoke is introspective and haunted, while Stack is ambitious and impulsive. Caton shines as Sammie, whose music becomes a beacon for the community and supernatural forces. Supporting actors, including Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, add depth to the narrative.
My biggest criticism is the film's pacing and reliance on exposition. While the story is rich, certain character backstories, particularly the twins' experiences in Chicago, are conveyed through dialogue rather than visual storytelling. Incorporating flashbacks could have provided a more immersive understanding of their pasts and motivations.
Despite this, Sinners is a bold fusion of historical realism and horror. Coogler uses the vampire mythos to explore themes of racial violence, cultural appropriation, and resilience. The film's atmospheric cinematography and evocative blues soundtrack enhance its impact, making it a standout entry in Coogler's filmography, an early contender for many year-end top ten lists, and a must-see at a Drive-In near you.
