Project Hail Mary Review

by Released : 2026-03-20

Project Hail Mary marks the long-awaited directorial return of Phil Lorde and Chris Miller, and stars Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, a man on a mission to save Earth from a dying sun. It is a thrilling, emotional sci-fi epic that balances high-concept science with deeply human storytelling. In the film, Dr. Grace (Gosling) awakens alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, the stakes become clear: Earth is facing extinction due to a mysterious organism draining the Sun’s energy, and Grace may be humanity’s last hope.

The plot unfolds through a mix of present-day survival and flashbacks, revealing Grace’s reluctant recruitment into Project Hail Mary. What begins as a standard “save the world” premise evolves into something far more unique when Grace encounters Rocky, an alien from another star system. Their unlikely friendship becomes the heart of the film, adding warmth, humor, and genuine emotional depth. Rocky is not just a standout character—he elevates the entire story.

Visually, the film is stunning, with breathtaking depictions of space and alien environments that rival—and arguably surpass—those seen in Interstellar. The scientific concepts are complex but presented in an engaging, accessible way, staying true to the spirit of Andy Weir’s work while expanding it cinematically beyond The Martian.

Gosling delivers one of his best performances, capturing both the humor and vulnerability of Grace. However, the first act does suffer from some pacing issues, and the film could have benefited from more flashbacks with the supporting cast to deepen their impact.

Despite these minor flaws, Project Hail Mary is an unforgettable experience—smart, emotional, and visually spectacular. It stands as one of the best sci-fi films in recent years and a future classic, run to see this one at a drive-in near you.
