Monkey Man is directed and starring Dev Patel as an underground street fighter in India struggling to get by while also attempting to avenge his mother's death. The film has a clear three-act structure with the first and third acts of the film being fantastic. However, in exposition, the heavy second act prevents the film from reaching the heights of similar action films such as John Wick.
When the film has intense action scenes with Patel donning a black suit and transforming into a one-man wrecking crew similar to Keanu Reeves Wick the film is at its best.
Overall it was a very good action film but I wanted more action, a better villain, and no lull between big fight scenes, the film was still excellent and an admirable directorial debut for Patel.
