Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin and stars Pierre Coffin, Jesse Eisenberg, Trey Parker, Christoph Waltz, and Allison Janney. The film is easily the best installment in the franchise since the original Despicable Me, breathing fresh life into a series that had increasingly begun to feel repetitive. Rather than simply recycling another Gru-centered adventure, Coffin turns the Minions loose in 1920s Hollywood and uses the setting to create an affectionate ode to silent cinema and classic monster movies.
The film’s strongest decision is focusing on James, Henry, and Ed, whose friendship gives the typically chaotic Minions considerably more personality than usual. James’ desire to become a filmmaker provides the story with a surprisingly sincere emotional center, while Henry and Ed help transform what could have been another collection of slapstick sequences into a genuine underdog story about creativity and friendship.
The Hollywood storyline also gives the movie endless opportunities for visual comedy, particularly as the Minions struggle with the transition from silent films to sound. Once Goomi and the monsters enter the story, the film becomes increasingly absurd, but the escalating chaos fits naturally with the franchise’s style. Jesse Eisenberg’s Dort is another highlight, particularly through the ridiculous subplot involving his attempted alien invasion and unexpected romance.
Not every joke lands, and the enormous final battle occasionally becomes overly frantic, but the film’s imagination rarely slows down. By combining classic Hollywood, monster-movie spectacle, and the Minions’ trademark comedy, Minions & Monsters feels genuinely inventive and proves there is still considerable life left in the franchise.
