The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is ultimately a disappointing sequel that never fully captures the creativity, charm, or emotional simplicity that made Super Mario Galaxy one of Nintendo’s greatest games. While the original source material is filled with wonder, loneliness, and imaginative worldbuilding, the film often feels overstuffed with fan service, rushed exposition, and too many side characters competing for attention. Instead of embracing the quieter emotional core that made the game special, the movie leans heavily into Illumination-style chaos and nonstop action, sacrificing much of the magic along the way.
That said, the film is far from terrible. The animation is consistently gorgeous, especially during the space-set sequences involving the Comet Observatory and Planet Bowser, and several action scenes are genuinely exciting. The movie also benefits from a cast that seems to be having a great time, even when the material around them feels uneven. The biggest standout is easily Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, whose surprise appearance ends up injecting the film with far more energy and personality than expected. Powell’s cocky yet charming take on the Star Fox pilot is easily one of the movie’s highlights, and his chemistry with the main cast provides some of the film’s funniest moments.
Despite its entertaining set pieces and occasional charm, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie never reaches the emotional or imaginative heights fans hoped for. It remains a visually fun but ultimately hollow blockbuster sequel that struggles to live up to one of the greatest Mario games ever made.
