Godzilla x Kong

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a 2024 film directed by Adam Wingard and starring Dan Steven, Rebecca Hall, and Bryan Tyree Henry in the fifth installment of the Monsterverse franchise. The film sees Hall and Henry reprise their roles from 2021s Godzilla vs Kong with Wingard returning to direct.

Like all Monsterverse films, the human characters often take a back seat to the monsters with King Kong being the focus of this film. Henry returns as the kaiju-obsessed podcaster who teamed up with Millie Bobby Brown in the previous film and along with Dan Stevens, as an eccentric kaiju veterinarian named Trapper, provides much-needed comic relief. Both give admirable performances that greatly improve the film and I hope both return for future installments

Despite the solid human performances the storylines for these humans was lacking.  I truly hope future Monsterverse films can learn from Apple TVs Monarch also set in the Monsterverse with a greater focus on human characters and the recently released Godzilla Minus One which had a fraction of the budget but was a superior film due to its human characters' development.

Overall this film has kaiju action fans of the franchise will come to expect but underwhelming human storylines compared to other installments (which is saying a lot for this franchise) makes it one of the lesser Monsterverse films
