About Coober Pedy Drive-in Theatre
The Coober Pedy Drive-in is a single screen drive-in theater located in Coober Pedy, South Australia. It is one of only two remaining drive-ins in South Australia. It was opened in 1965 and operated until its closure in 1985. From 1985 through the mid 1990's, it would open occasionally to show special films. But by 1995 it was falling apart and no longer usable. A private commercial group re-opened the Coober Pedy Drive-in in 1996 and ran it until their lease expired in 2000. At that point, volunteers formed an association and began operating the drive-in and have been operating it ever since. It is still operated solely by volunteers and all proceeds go back into the drive-in. The Coober Pedy is open year round and shows one movie each Saturday night.
