extraordinary job on the expansion & improvements.
A second 66' wide screen was added in 1999. The Bay
is also one of the few American Drive-ins which has
an indoor viewing area (which can seat 60 people)
and the only New York State Drive-in that has one.
Between the two screens, the Bay accommodates
up to 600 cars and provides audio with FM stereo
radio broadcast. They are open seasonally, May -
October; weekends only in spring and fall; 7 nites
June thru LaborDay. They're lighting each of their
two screens with double features. For the nostalgia-

*
On the morning of Saturday, July 15th, 1995, a freak
windstorm had torn through the Bay Drive-in, causing
extensive damage, but the owners were commited to
recovering and reopening (remarkably, within 2wks).
The following season, in the summer of '96, Twister
opened (the Bay already saw Coming Attractions),
with a Deja view of the wind taking a Drive-in apart.

Hi-Way Drive-in: 518-731-8672
located on Route 9W (7mi north of Catskill)
5 miles south of NY State Thruway exit 21-B
Built back in 1950 and in operation since 1951, the
Hi-Way was showing its age when it was acquired
by new owners in 1997. They have gone to obvious
effort and expense to improve the property and to
give the old gal a needed facelift - which is evident
throughout - from the freshly painted ticketbooth
to the refurbished bathrooms, and the very well
organized snackbar area. For Season'99 a second
screen was added, and audio had been upgraded
to SuperFM Dolby process stereo radio broadcast;
while not identical twins (as their original screen
is 25' wider than the 50'wide screen added in '99).
The enthusiastic response to these additions and
improvements encouraged the Hi-way crew to add
an ancillary parking field and a 3rd screen in 2004.

- Hunter (Greene County) New York
Mountain Drive-in Theatre:
located at 1957 State Route 296
(2 miles off of Route 23A, Hunter)
Rustic outdoor picture show that first opened in 1948,
a rural solo screen— nicely nestled in a sweet spot
with a view, ringed-in by verdant mountain peaks; a
couple miles upwind of Hunter Mountain. The petite
(200-car) venue, situated in a mountaintop meadow,
hosts a 52' wide screen. After a series of ownership
changes, and a few years in the dark, it was again
refurbished and had reopened last year under new
management. Opening weekend (a 3 Stooges short,
Ghostbusters, and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind)
was pushed back to June 2nd, following torrential
rains .. which also foreshadowed what the weather
would be like most weekends during Season 2006
(even washing-away the primary access road, which
was not repaired until well after the season ended).
An ambitious format consisting predominantly of
classic "retro" revival screenings, including vintage
cartoons and indy films, with a mix of 2nd run movies
and frequent triple-features, was attempted during what
was to become the worst weather-season in the Drive-in's
history. Movie Audio is provided via radio broadcast
(91.9 FM). Admission: $15 per carload (2006).

Transit Drive-in: 716-625-8535
located on Route 78 (Transit Road) NE of Buffalo
The picture show is an old family tradition ..
the Cohen family acquired its first theatre in
(Wayland, NY) 1927 .. acquiring 3 others within a
decade, in Hornell, Corning, and Mount Morris (NY).
At that point they embarked on constructing their
own theatre palace, the Stueben, in Hornell; then
after acquiring the Allendale Theater in Buffalo,
they went outdoors with the construction of their
first Drive-in theatre, the Van Buren in Dunkirk, NY
(which remained in the family until it closed in '79).
Two years after building their 1st Drive-in, the Cohens
opened the Sheridan Drive-in near Buffalo, which they
would operate for 31 years. Six years after opening the
family's 2nd Drive-in, they acquired the Transit Drive-in,
which has remained in operation to this day, passed-down
through 3 generations (for several years back in the 70's
the Transit had operated year-round, by issuing portable
heaters to their patrons). Presently, the Transit is NY's
largest Drive-in: four screens lit with double-features.
(and a 19-hole miniature golf course for early arrivals).

- Middlehope (Orange County) New York
9W Drive-in: (ongoing restoration effort)
located on Route 9W, 4mi north of I-84 - Newburgh;
A restoration attempt had been mounted and attempted by
Tom Pedler and associates, aided and abetted by volunteers
who made progress with improving the appearance of the site,
clearing the grounds, painting the buildings, etc., but the
effort ran into a series of obstacles that resulted in Tom's
decision to exercise their cancellation clause in the initial
lease under which they were operating while attempting to
resurrect the Middlehope (which opened originally in May
of 1950 and had operated up until October of 1987). Sadly,
Tom Pedler passed-away, unexpectedly, April 27th 2002.
But on an UPnote, aspirations and efforts to revive the old
Middlehope persist, despite the obstacles, and though that
great big screen remains dark, the sloped pasture beneath it
remains a Field Of Dreams. Most recently, the acquisition of
the property was being explored & negotiated by the Society
for the Preservation of Outdoor Theatres (a not-for-profit org).
Word is: if the group does manage to succeed where others
have failed in the effort to revive the Middlehope, their plan
for the Drive-in is for it to be operated on a non-profit basis,
"intrinsic with and within the community," member-operated.
There have been successful non-profit-oriented revivals of
Drive-ins elsewhere, both in the U.S. & Canada. Let's Hope!
